Facing Fears

When we have fearful feelings we often associate them with negative situations. Often, these feelings are generated from lack of knowledge. When we gain clarity about circumstances the fear is usually replaced with positive feelings.

Feel the feeling.

Imagine you are at an amusement park and you get to ride a ride that thrills you. You are so excited for your turn. You can feel the anticipation fill your body. Notice how you are feeling in this moment. Notice where the energy is in your body. Now, imagine something you are “afraid of” such as heights or speaking in front of a group. Notice the energy in your body. Hmmm, is it possible that this energy feels the same as excitement?

Labels have meaning.

When we label something (such as a feeling) or someone (based on diagnosis or other categories), we assign a meaning to that thing whether we mean to or not. What if “it just is.” What if fear and excitement are the same energetic feelings in our bodies with different labels. And what if speaking in front of a group could be as much fun as your favorite ride? What if people are people and the things that make them different are also the things that make them special.

Feel into it.

The next time you are experiencing a feeling of fear, notice it and allow yourself to identify what area of your life needs greater understanding or clarity. Then, take a breath to release those old feelings and replace them with love, confidence, and compassion.

Face fears with understanding.
